12 Essential Self-Help Education Topics   Support Groups  /   How they work

Every one of our Depression Recovery Group meetings includes a brief, self-help education segment. We continually cycle through 12 essential areas and help you learn how to apply each of these in your life.

  Understanding and Living with Depression
We review the main causes of depression and how to move toward a better life experience. We look at the biological and experiential causes of depression, how they interact, and how to create a plan for managing your situation.

  Getting Professional Help
Learn how to choose and work with doctors and therapists. This is a very important topic since we recommend that you do seek professional help, so that you know what your specific condition is and to get treatment that is fine tuned to help you the most.

  Stress Reduction
Learn how to feel more relaxed and comfortable. Stress or anxiety overlaps with depression about two-thirds of the time. It is both a cause and an effect of depression. Working directly on reducing your stress will help lessen your depression and make you better able to deal with your issues.

  Effective Sleep Habits
Sleep problems are both a cause and an effect of depression. Making adjustments to your sleep habits can be one of the easiest things you can do to reduce your depression.

  Using Medications
Anti-depressants and other medications help about two-thirds of the people who suffer with depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety. This segment will help you understand what medications can do for you and how to work with your medical doctor.

  Diet and Supplements
What you eat and drink can have a big effect on your tendency to get depressed. This segment will help you to understand which foods and supplements help and which can cause problems.

  The Benefits of Sunlight
Sunlight plays a role in our mood and in our circadian rhythm (our wake / sleep schedule). Exposure to sunlight or very bright light can be helpful to you. This education segment helps you to learn what you can do with sunlight to help yourself and what to be careful about.

  Healthy Thinking
When we are depressed our brain doesn't work as well. We tend to ruminate on negative thoughts. This education segment focuses on common dysfunctional thinking patterns, how to deal with them, and how to improve the quality of your thinking.

  Self-Awareness / Mindfulness
In order to avoid depression or deal with it effectively, we need to be as aware as possible of how we are thinking, feeling physically and doing emotionally. This segment will help you understand how to become more aware of yourself so that you can more often deal with depression triggers as they arise.

  Supportive Relationships
Having good relationships with family and friends is important for helping with recovery and for having a satisfying life. Learn how to avoid unhealthy relationships and how maintain good ones when we are depressed - something that can be difficult to do.

  Building Self-Esteem
When we are depressed we feel poorly about ourselves and our lives. We may be very self-critical and be filled with self doubt. These feelings can feed negative rumination and anxiety. Learn how to recognize drivers of low self-esteem, how to deal with them, and how to build our confidence and sense of self worth.

  The Promise of Exercise
Exercise promotes brain health, raises our mood and gives us a sense of accomplishment. These factors are all reasons that exercise reduces depression, helps us to recover, and helps us stay healthy. Learn about the types of exercise that are most beneficial, how to get started on an exercise routine, and how to stay motivated.
